S.C. House Democrats, led by Rep. Spencer Wetmore, to hold press conference announcing bill to protect choice in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA – February 7 – The South Carolina House Democratic Caucus will hold a press conference on Wednesday, February 8, in the second-floor lobby of the State House at 11:30 AM to announce a new bill by Rep. Spencer Wetmore (D-Charleston) to protect a woman’s right to choose in South Carolina.

This comes as Republicans continue to push an extreme abortion ban despite the public’s overwhelming opposition to it and the South Carolina Supreme Court ruling that their previous six-week abortion ban was unconstitutional. Their new ban, H. 3774, was passed by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

A Public Policy poll from 2022 found that 75% of South Carolinians agree that “Women should have the right to make their own personal health care decisions.”

Wetmore’s bill is a comprehensive piece of legislation that includes protections for in vitro fertilization (I.V.F.) and birth control, as well as reproductive freedom.
